GOT Art Gallery presents #FeaturedArtist

Featuring the work of three the Kansas City area artists, Got Art Gallery: Home of Summit Art presents #FeaturedArtist. Including artwork by Theresa Benavidez, Kaitlin Gray and Megan Leong, the exhibit focuses on artists discovered through Instagram.   Gallery Director, Teresa Keene, decided to take a unique approach to selected artist for the upcoming exhibit.  As the trend pushes people to social media to keep in touch and find out about happenings in the community she chose to put together an exhibit of local Instagram artists. With a simple hashtag search she was able to locate the talent that will be displaying in the upcoming exhibit at GOT Art Gallery. The public is invited to attend the opening reception on Friday, April 28th, from 5pm-8pm. The exhibit is on view from April 28th through May 22nd, 2017.

Theresa Benavidez is a local Kansas City mixed media artists.  Her work is non-representational layers of vibrant color and mark making.  When asked about her current series Benavidez states “My paintings are my way of communicating my life experiences. I use a colorful palette of acrylic paint, ink, oil pastel, chalk and graphite on paper and canvas. Painting is my mediation, it fills my heart with joy.  Nothing makes me happier than to share my work with others.”

When not homeschooling her oldest two children or changing diapers for her youngest, you could most likely find Kaitlin Gray in her studio with loud music playing and a paint brush in her hand (and chocolate not too far away).  As long as she can remember she has loved the messy and free nature of painting. Gray took private lessons as a teenager and painted off and on for several years. Grays early work consists of very life-like landscapes, animals and buildings. It wasn’t until recently that I decided to refine my passion and find what style is the most “me”.

Megan Leong is a painter and has loved creating things for as long as she can remember. Leong grew up in Lee’s Summit, and currently lives in Independence with her husband and 4-year-old daughter. Leong and her husband are expecting their second child, a boy, in August! Leong studied art at University of Central Missouri for her undergraduate degree and received an MFA from Kendall College of Art and Design. Leong has shown work in galleries in Michigan, Chicago, and Kansas City, and also sell select pieces online in my Etsy shop. She recently exhibited my work at the Kansas City Artist Coalition, Art Westport, Plaza Art Fair, Prairie Village Art Fair, and Strawberry Swing Events. Leongs’ work is in corporate and private collections nationwide.

The paintings displayed in this exhibit are inspired by nature and everyday life and relationships. Leong uses images and colors that inspires her and causes her to recall memories.  When asked about her current body of work Leong states “I celebrate a sense of wonder and exploration of nature. My thoughts, prayers, hopes, and daydreams are scribbled down on the canvas through brushstrokes and images. It is my desire that people will feel a sense of connection, inspiration, hope, and joy when experiencing my work.”

The exhibit is on view from April 28th through May 22nd, 2017.
